Description
Osteoporosis is a common disease that is often under diagnosed and undertreated. This undertreated population is at high risk of developing multiple fractures that correlate that lead to debilitation to a point of lower quality of life and increased mortality rates. This lecture focuses on updates to the diagnosis and treatment of Osteoporosis. The speakers analysis includes updating the criteria for diagnosis as well as emphasis on the principles for initiation of treatment and future evaluations. Discussions includes the effect of glucocorticoid-induced osteoporosis and treatment options. Finally, the discussion will consider therapy options and review the efficacy and the side effect profile of these medications.

Chau Nguyen, DO, is a board certified rheumatologist who specializes in treating patients with autoimmune diseases including systemic lupus, rheumatoid arthritis and vasculitis. Dr. Nguyen earned her medical degree at Western University of Health Sciences in Pomona, California. She completed her residency in internal medicine as well as her fellowship training in rheumatology at Loma Linda University Medical Center in Loma Linda, California. In addition to her practice, Dr. Nguyen serves as a Clinical Assistant Professor of Internal Medicine for Western University of Health Sciences. Her clinical interest includes rheumatoid arthritis, inflammatory arthritis and osteoporosis. She holds board certifications in both internal medicine and rheumatology, has publications on various autoimmune diseases and is certified in USSONAR musculoskeletal ultrasound procedures.
