Description
Obstructive Sleep Apnea is a highly prevalent medical condition affecting all age groups. It is highly associated with cardiovascular disease, neurocognitive impairment, and reduced quality of life. It is an important disease for primary care providers and specialist to be able to recognize and refer appropriately or treat. The lecture aims to discuss latest advances in the evaluation of sleep apnea, discuss home versus in laboratory sleep testing, and conclude with treatment options ranging from CPAP, devices, and surgery.
Learning Objectives:
1. Recognize the common signs and symptoms of sleep apnea.
2. Be familiar with cardiovascular and metabolic complications associated with sleep apnea.
3. Be familiar with diagnostic testing, including home sleep test versus in lab sleep testing.
4. Be familiar with current treatment options including CPAP therapy, mandibular advancement devices, and surgical therapy.

Dr. Cao’s clinical and academic interests includes breathing disorders in neuromuscular disease, central sleep apnea, and home mechanical ventilation. Her research focuses on sleep disordered breathing in neuromuscular disease and advanced positive airway pressure devices for complex breathing disorders.
In addition, Dr. Cao is particularly interested in advancing sleep medicine education. She is conducting a funded study aimed at evaluating the status of sleep medicine education across primary residency and fellowship training programs in United States, of which results will be presented at APSS 2018. She is actively involved in promoting and improving sleep medicine education. Dr. Cao holds elected committee membership positions in national organizations including AASM and CHEST. She is also a lecturer at national meetings including APSS, CHEST, and ATS.
